Representative Rush Holt (D-12) released the following statement after President Obama’s health care speech to Congress. “Tonight President Obama clearly stated why the status quo is unacceptable and why we must fix our broken health insurance system. Americans are living sicker, dying younger, and paying more than we should or than residents of other major countries do. My guest for tonight’s speech was Adira Riben, a Monmouth Junction resident who recently lost her job and her insurance. She is concerned about the difficulty in finding new health insurance because she suffers from two chronic health conditions. I hear from many residents who are happy with the coverage they have. Before she lost her job, I imagine Ms. Riben was happy with her coverage too. Unfortunately, almost everyone is one stroke of bad luck away from something they can’t handle. It shouldn’t be this way. The fight for meaningful health insurance reform has lasted 100 years. We are closer than ever to ensuring that all Americans — whether they have insurance or not — will have security and stability in their health care.”

The country’s first Secretary of Homeland Security and former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge will discuss and sign his memoir of his years at the Department of Homeland Security, The Test of Our Times: America Under Siege…and How We Can Be Safe Again, on Monday, September 21 at 7 p.m. at the Princeton Barnes & Noble in the MarketFair Mall. Seating is limited and will begin at 6 p.m. on a first-come, first-seated basis. Standing room will be available and signing will follow a Q&A session. The next meeting of the Princeton Community Democratic Organization (PCDO) will be on Sunday, September 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the Suzanne Patterson Center. The 91st White Elephant, Art, Antiques and Rummage Sale sponsored by The Auxiliary of University Medical Center at Princeton, will be held on Saturday, September 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and on Sunday, September 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the first level of the parking garage at University Medical Center at Princeton. Donations are currently being collected at The Auxiliary Storage Facility at 905 Herrontown Road, from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays and Tuesdays, and on Tuesday evenings from 5 to 7 p.m. through September 19. All proceeds will benefit a variety of projects including the life-saving activities that will be provided in the Emergency Department’s Critical Trauma Care Room and the Children’s Playground at the new hospital site.
