Bloomberg's Donation Funds New Dormitory

Matthew Hersh

An undisclosed gift to help finance the construction and completion of the new "ellipse" dorms at the edge of the Poe-Pardee fields on the Princeton University campus was recently revealed to be a donation from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The dormitory will be named Emma B. Bloomberg Hall, after his daughter, a member of the University's Class of 2001.

A multi-billionaire mogul who stepped aside as CEO of Bloomberg LP, his global financial services and information company, to become mayor of New York City, Mr. Bloomberg had initially intended for the donation to be anonymous, and while the actual amount remains undisclosed, the donation will help pay for the $36 million dorm. Until the mayor's identity was revealed, the donation was one of the largest anonymous gifts in the University's history.

The new dormitory, which will provide rooms for 220 students, also serves as the new studio location of WPRB.

Neither Mayor Bloomberg or his spokesperson, Ed Skyler, could be reached for comment.
