There is an oft-stated football theory claiming that a team can make its biggest improvement from its opener to its second game.
Getting one game under its belt can help a team fix glitches that occur in the heat of that first battle and sharpen execution in all phases of the game.
Princeton University football head coach Roger Hughes was hoping that his team could successfully apply that theory when the Tigers played at Lehigh last Saturday, looking to bounce back from a 38-7 opening day loss to the Citadel.
In the first two games this season, Princeton High senior quarterback Michael Olentine was just a little off target.
The 5’11, 160-pound Olentine had hit 12-of-31 passes for 184 yards and three interceptions as the Little Tigers got out of the gate with narrow wins over Nottingham and Ewing.
As PHS prepared for its showdown last Saturday against fellow unbeaten, WW/P-N (2-0), Olentine put in some extra time on the passing game.
Adi Debiche wasn’t looking to do anything fancy as she took a free kick for the Princeton High girls’ soccer team in the second half against Allentown last Thursday.
With PHS and Allentown knotted at 1-1, senior defender Debiche was looking to direct the kick near the goal to generate a scoring opportunity for a teammate.
Instead, Debiche got the score herself, sailing the ball over the Allentown keeper into the top of the net for a sensational goal.
For one Samantha, winning a Mercer County Tournament singles title was old hat; for the other Samantha, it was a new adventure.
Forming their own private Sams’ Club, Princeton Day School girls’ tennis junior star Samantha Lieb won her third straight MCT crown at first singles while her precocious freshman teammate, Samantha Asch, burst on the scene by breezing to the title at second singles.
The efforts of the two Sams, both nationally ranked in their age groups, propelled PDS to a second place in the MCT team standings as the Panthers piled up 20 points, just 2.5 points behind champion WW/P-S.
As the Hun School girls’ soccer team battled Princeton Day School last week in its season opener, Monica King hobbled out of the game in the second half and took a break to stretch her aching legs.
“I guess I didn’t drink enough water; I kept getting charley horses,” said King, a junior midfielder for Hun, who used a camera tower behind the Raider bench to support her as she did various leg stretches.
King gamely reentered the contest and resembled a race horse as she made several runs through the PDS defense.
