Mildred Wells, 87, died Thursday, March 26, at home in Ewing. A Princeton resident for most of her life, she attended what was then known as the Witherspoon School for Coloreds before graduating from Princeton High School. She joined the First Baptist Church at a young age, becoming treasurer of the Usher Board and chairperson of the Finance Committee while serving in many other programs.
She is survived by her daughters, Hope Wells of Princeton, and Myrna Samuel of Ewing; daughter-in-law Rose Mary Wells of Ewing; sisters, Frances Evans of Princeton, Louise Driver of Pennington, Gladys Jefferson-Russell of Trenton; brothers, Hyette Briscoe Jr. of Princeton and Carl Briscoe of Connecticut; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and special friends Madge Gilbert of South Orange and Martha Barbour of West Windsor.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday April 2 at the First Baptist Church, John Street and Paul Robeson Place in Princeton. Calling hours will be from 9 a.m. until the time of the church service. Interment will be at Princeton Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Hughes Funeral Home.
Wilma Bates, 92, of Rocky Hill, died March 25 at Rolling Hills Care Center in Lebanon.
Born in Rocky Hill, she was a lifelong area resident. She graduated from Princeton High School and worked in the retail business for many local department stores.
She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church of Rocky Hill.
Wife of the late Charles Bates and sister of the late Alvin Ward, Donald Ward, Dorothy Young, and Irene Price, she is survived by a son, Charles Bates of Flemington; a daughter, Charolette Bates of Nevada; a niece whom she raised, Irene Gendron of Browns Mills; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral service was March 30 at Trinity Episcopal Church, Crescent Avenue, Rocky Hill. Burial was in Rocky Hill Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of The Mather-Hodge Funeral Home.
Barbara M. Lancaster, Ph.D., 79, of Monmouth Junction, formerly of Princeton, died March 26 after a brief illness.
Born in Stafford Springs, Conn., she spent most of her childhood in Wales, Mass. She married Colin Lancaster in 1948 and moved to Princeton that year to begin her college education at Westminster Choir College.
She was a church organist and choir director of the Griggstown Reformed Church for many years.
She continued her education with night classes at Rider College, transitioning to the world of business and finance. She received a BS in commerce, an MBA in business management, and a PhD in business administration in 2006. She was also a certified CPA. As a result of her experience she became an advocate for woman and minorities in business, receiving the SBA New Jersey Women in Business Advocate Award in 1987.
In 1991 she received an appointment to the New Jersey Development Authority. Her business, Lancaster Management, a successful financial planning and tax preparation service in Monmouth Junction, attracted hundreds of clients.
For many years she was an active member and treasurer of Community Without Walls (Princeton House No. 5).
She is survived by her five children, Wayne Lancaster of Freehold, Sharon Roberts of Athens, Ga., Kevin Lancaster of Clarksville, Md., Karen Lancaster of Cosby, Tenn., and Kim Lancaster of New Hope, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service for friends and family will be held on Saturday, April 4 at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Princeton, 50 Cherry Hill Road. All are invited to attend.
Barbara C. Macauley, 90, of Lawrenceville, died March 28 at home.
Born in Princeton, she was a lifelong resident.
Mrs. Macauley was employed at Princeton University for over 30 years. She was a member of Nassau Presbyterian Church, the Deborah Hospital Foundation, and the Princeton Business and Professional Women’s Club.
Daughter of the late John and Bessie Cooper, wife of the late Austin B. Macauley and John O’Leary, and sister of the late John Cooper, she is survived by two daughters, Barbara Marvel of New Orleans, La. and Linda Chmura of Lawrenceville; a son, Jack Macauley of Greenville, S.C.; and three grandchildren.
The funeral service was yesterday at the Mather-Hodge Funeral Home, followed by burial in Princeton Cemetery.

A memorial service for Charles Lamb Johnston will be held this Saturday, April 4 at noon at Trinity Church, 33 Mercer Street.
Mr. Johnston died March 11 at Merwick Care Center in Princeton.
