Noah Savage may have been out in Southern California last week but that doesn’t mean his thoughts weren’t on the Princeton Recreation Department Men’s Summer Basketball League.
With his George’s Roasters and Ribs/Ivy Inn team facing defending champion Northwestern Financial in the league’s best-of-three championship series, the former Hun and Princeton University standout was monitoring developments as he visited friends in the L.A. area.
Shahid Abdul-Karim headed in a new direction this past February when he entered the Cape May Police Academy.
In pursuing the law enforcement training, Abdul-Karim left behind a teaching job at Princeton High and his post as an assistant boys’ basketball coach at the school.
Accordingly, the former basketball star at Springfield College and longtime standout in the Princeton Recreation Department Summer Men’s League left hoops on hold as he plunged himself into the rigorous curriculum of the academy.
Andy Potts found himself at a crossroad after competing in the triathlon at the 2004 Summer Olympics.
In the wake of finishing 22nd in the event, the 1995 Princeton High alum had a decision to make.
“I was still learning and improving,” said Potts, who was a swim star at the University of Michigan after graduating from PHS.
“The question was could I make it a viable occupation; could I make a living doing this. I needed more polish; I had to become stronger in the bike and the running.”
Kristen Young kept plenty busy this past winter for the Princeton University women’s ice hockey team.
The star goaltender started all 32 games for Princeton, playing in 1,945 of 1,954 minutes, only leaving the ice when Princeton was in empty net situations.
Young became the Princeton iron woman when expected back-up goalie Brittany Parisi had to give up the sport prior to the 2007-08 season due to back injuries, leaving converted lacrosse player Meg Murray as the lone reserve goalie.
For Young, carrying that burden helped make her a stronger player.
Sasha Sherry knew that she had to be aggressive in order to get selected for the U.S. Women’s Hockey Under-22 Select Team.
Playing at the U-22 try-out camp in Lake Placid, N.Y. in late June, the Princeton University sophomore defenseman didn’t waste time making an impression.
“We had our first game halfway through camp and I had a good game,” said Sherry, who had helped the U.S. to a gold medal this past January in the Under-18 World Championships in Calgary, Alberta.
“I think it was my best game of the camp; I think I established that I could play.”
