A GATED COMMUNITY: Princeton University re-installed
its FitzRandolph Gates at its main entrance on Nassau Street late
last week. The gates were removed in late July for repair and
restoration in preparation for the entrance's 100th anniversary
next year. More of a symbolic landmark than a utilitarian structure,
the gates were installed in 1905 at the request of Augustus Van
Winkle, a descendent of Nathaniel FitzRandolph, who donated the
land on which Nassau Hall was built. The gates have since become
a symbol for both the town and the University. |
