Borough To Receive Feedback On Traffic, Transportation Issues

Candace Braun

The need to improve pedestrian safety in the Borough is one of the main concerns that will come from the Borough's Traffic and Transportation Committee tonight when it presents its findings and resident feedback to Council. The 13-page report will be presented by the committee's Sandy Soloman.

Some suggestions will include recommendations for the New Jersey Department of Transportation regarding pedestrian issues such as signal timing and traffic flow patterns to permit pedestrians adequate time to cross at the intersections of Nassau Street, Stockton Street, and Bayard Lane, as well as the repainting of sidewalks in those same areas. Another recommendation is to develop a plan to install lighted crosswalks along Nassau Street at key locations, particularly between Moore and Harrison streets.

The committee also believes signal timing should be changed at the intersection of Nassau and Witherspoon streets, to permit pedestrians more time to cross the heavily-trafficked intersection safely.

Mailed suggestions that came from Borough residents include the posting of signs at each "gateway" entrance to Princeton, reading, "Princeton Protects its Pedestrians ‹Crosswalks Enforced," to make visitors aware of pedestrian traffic; a "wait for walk" sign at the intersection of Witherspoon and Nassau Streets so that pedestrians don't try to cross when traffic on Nassau Street is making a left; and the removal of parking on Wiggins Street, between Witherspoon and Moore streets, so that a shoulder can be added for safe bicycle travel.

These and other issues will be presented at Council's regular meeting, at 6 p.m. in Borough Hall.
