The Coalition for Peace Action (CFPA) will celebrate the passage of the new START Treaty on Wednesday, December 29, at 5 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Princeton (just up the hill from the light at the intersection of Route 206 and Cherry Hill Road). CFPA Executive Director Bob Moore has noted the role of grassroots advocacy in the successful ratification vote: CFPA sent out numerous alerts to its E-alert list of some 3,400 households in the region; created and maintained a special section of its web site; and did a dozen nights of phone banking to peace supporters in states with swing Republicans, including North Carolina, Ohio, and Illinois. “We also worked very closely with two Senate champions for START ratification, Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey and New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez, who are both on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee,” added Rev. As a show of appreciation to all Mercer County golf card holders, The Mercer County Park Commission is once again offering a free day of golf on January 1, 2011 “A round of golf is a terrific way to usher in a new decade for many of our local golfers who’ve adopted this fun tradition,” said Executive Director Kevin Bannon. Mercer Oaks East and West in West Windsor; Mountain View in Ewing; and Princeton Country Club in West Windsor will all be open, weather permitting. Both Mercer Oaks and Mountain View courses will accept automated advanced tee times by phone, or internet reservation for those individuals who have renewed their resident membership cards for 2011; 2010 cards will be accepted for the free play day, but those residents must either call the course of their choice directly for a reservation, or walk-on on New Year’s Day. The first tee time at all courses is 8 a.m., frost permitting. The free day of golf will be rescheduled in the event of inclement weather.

With the tax season approaching, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is informing Mercer County residents that the local Trenton Taxpayer Assistance Center will be moving, effective January 11, 2011. The current location at 44 South Clinton Avenue, Trenton, will close at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 6. The new location at One State Street Square, 50 West State Street, will open at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 11. “The move was scheduled prior to the tax filing season to have minimal impact on taxpayers who want to visit the office,” said IRS spokesperson Gregg Semanick. The current office will be closed all day on Friday, January 7 through to and including Monday, January 10. Normal business hours, which will resume at the new location on Tuesday January 11, are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Taxpayer Assistance Centers offer face-to-face assistance by IRS representatives.
