STEPPING UP: Princeton University men’s soccer player Antoine Hoppenot controls a ball in action this fall. Hoppenot, a former Princeton Day School star, helped the Tigers to a 13-4-1 overall record and the program’s first perfect 7-0 Ivy League record. Junior striker Hoppenot was named as the Ivy Player of the year and earned All-American recognition.

When Sydney Johnson started his tenure as head coach of the Princeton University men’s basketball team in 2007 with two straight wins, there was cause for optimism.

Harsh reality, though, quickly set in as Princeton lost 12 straight on the way to a dismal 6-23 season.

For Princeton High boys’ basketball player Matt Hoffman, the first three quarters against Notre Dame last Thursday night were a bit of a nightmare.

The junior guard had just one bucket as PHS blew a halftime lead to fall behind the Fighting Irish 38-35 heading into the fourth quarter.

While Hoffman was frustrated, he was buoyed by the support of his teammates.

While Tony Bowman was happy to see his Stuart Country Day School basketball team jump out to a halftime lead against visiting Monroe High last Wednesday, he wasn’t comfortable about the situation.

Missing two key players, Jasmine Smarr and Parris Branker, Stuart head coach Bowman knew his team faced an uphill battle despite holding a 24-19 advantage at intermission.
