Stankievech, a Trochu, Alberta native, was one of 11 Canadian winners of the prestigious fellowship and the 20th Princeton athlete to be so honored. |
Landis Stankievech got a bit of a comeuppance in the fall of 2004 as he adjusted to the academic rigors at Princeton University.
“On my first physics quiz, I got nine questions right out of 20,” recalled Stankievech.
“I realized things were at a different level and that I couldn’t do things like I used to.”
The Trochu, Alberta native, though, has given a lot of right answers since that inauspicious start.
When Sasha Sherry joined the Princeton University women’s hockey team this season, the freshman defenseman was focused on tending to her blue line duties.
Instead, the 6’0 native of Lehighton, Pa. has emerged as a major scoring threat for the Tigers, scoring 15 points in the team’s first 16 games, good for second place on the team behind Marykate Oakley’s 17 points.
For Sherry, her offensive production has been a bonus as she looks to fit in with the Tigers.
Gabe Lewullis and his teammates from the legendary 1997-98 Princeton University men’s basketball team took things in stride as they were honored recently during a halftime ceremony at Jadwin Gym.
Dressed casually in a cobalt blue shirt and black slacks, Lewullis graciously waved to the crowd when introduced and then shared knowing laughs with his teammates as their exploits were recounted.
The crowd at Jadwin was not laid back as they cheered heartily in greeting the storied team that took the college basketball world by storm 10 years ago when it went 27-2 and rose to the Top 10 in the national polls.
Kyle DeBlois has played on a lot of winning teams during his athletic career at Princeton High.
In the fall, DeBlois has been a stalwart for a PHS boys’ soccer program that won a Central Jersey sectional crown in 2006 and won the Mercer County Tournament (MCT) this past fall on the way to a 17-1 season.
