Township’s Timely Purchase of Equipment Expedited Snow Removal During Storm

“We were finished when other communities were still plowing,” said Princeton Township’s Department of Public Works Superintendent Don R. Hansen reporting on the Christmas weekend snow storm at last Wednesday’s Township Committee meeting.

Thanking Township Committee “for allowing me and my people to do the job,” Mr. Hansen attributed the “fantastic job” done by his department to the acquisition of new equipment approved by Township Committee in recent years. He noted that in the extremely adverse conditions that weekend, many municipalities faced equipment breakdowns. Since it was a holiday weekend, getting new parts was pretty much impossible for them.

The Wednesday morning Township Committee meeting was brief and, with several absentees, took place in Conference Room A in Township Hall. Routine items approved under the “consent agenda” included a resolution to cancel tax balances under $10.

In the wake of Borough Council’s failure to vote on an ordinance that would approve funding for the Community Park Pool, Committee member Sue Nemeth said that “we certainly hope that they will revisit this in the new year.” Ms. Nemeth, who became Deputy Mayor of the Township at the Sunday Reorganization Meeting (see the story on the front page) has served as the Committee’s Recreation Department liaison.

“Time is of the essence and they’re just stalling it at this point,” she added. Noting that it had been “a collaborative process” all along, she expressed disappointment not only with Borough Council’s failure to approve the ordinance, but with the absence of a move to second the motion. “Without a second there’s no real discussion,” she observed. “The pool is a very important issue in Princeton; we take it seriously and we need to address it.”
