J. Robert Hillier, founder of Hillier Architecture, has been awarded the AIA New Jersey 2008 Michael Graves FAIA (Fellow of the American Institute of Architects) Lifetime Achievement Medal. He is the second recipient of the award, following Michael Graves himself. The award recognizes his “compassion for design, [his] business model, and overall contributions to the profession,” said NJ AIA President Jerome Leslie Eben. Mr. Hillier will be honored on Saturday, January 12, at the AIA NJ’s annual Design Day and Service Awards Gala at the Newark Club, atop Seton Hall Law School in Newark.

An advocate for open space, Mr. Hillier began in solo practice as an architect in 1966. His firm evolved into a major architectural concern before merging with the Scotland-based company RMJM in 2007 to form RMJM Hillier. Mr. Hillier, who is also a Town Topics shareholder, has designed work for some of the nation’s top corporate, education, healthcare and research organizations, earning more than 300 design awards in his 41 years of practice.
