MARK OF EXCELLENCE: Princeton University mens hockey star Mark Magnowski glides up the ice in a game earlier this season. Last weekend, sophomore forward Magnowski helped the Tigers post a critical weekend sweep as they topped Dartmouth 5-2 on Friday and then edged Harvard 2-1 a night later. The wins left Princeton at 8-8 overall and 6-4 in ECAC Hockey League play, tied for first in the league standings with Harvard and Clarkson. The Tigers will look to keep on the winning track when they play at Yale on January 11 and Brown on January 12. |
It was the last game of 2007 and the Princeton University mens hockey team appeared headed to its ninth loss in its last 11 games.
The Tigers trailed 2-1 at Nebraska-Omaha heading into the third period.
But over the next 20 minutes, Princetons workmanlike sophomore forward Mark Magnowski took matters into his own hands, scoring a goal and adding two assists to spark a come-from-behind 5-3 win.
In 1996, Sydney Johnson came to Lehigh Universitys Stabler Arena with the Princeton University mens basketball team and helped the Tigers make history.
On a frigid March evening, team captain Johnson came up big from his guard position as the Tigers edged Penn 63-56 in overtime to win the Ivy League play-in contest and earn a bid to the NCAA tournament.
For the Princeton High girls swim team, its meet last Friday at winless Hamilton didnt appear to be anything to get too excited about.
PHS head coach Greg Hand, though, eagerly anticipated the meet as it represented the teams first competition after a long holiday layoff.
After firing in a three-pointer against Pennington last Saturday in the first quarter, Princeton Day School guard Kenny Holzhammer exhorted his teammates, hollering lets go.
The fired-up sophomore guard followed his own advice, erupting for 18 points in the first half as PDS built a 29-24 halftime cushion.
The holiday season wasnt kind to the Hun School boys basketball team.
The Raiders ended 2007 by squandering a late lead in a 48-45 loss to St. Patricks on December 20 and then suffering lopsided losses to American Christian Academy (87-60) and Academy of New Church (59-39) in the Jameer Nelson Classic.
