The Minority Education Committee (MEC) will host a “Forum About Family and Community Involvement in Our Schools” on Saturday, January 16, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Princeton High School Cafeteria.
The Minority Education Committee was created by the Princeton Regional Schools Board of Education. Its charge is to “be a source of information and readily available feedback to the Board and Administration on issues that impact the educational experience of minority students in the Princeton Regional Schools.”
“MEC has listened to parents’ concerns and supports their efforts to become stronger advocates and increase their involvement in the educational lives of their children,” said Chair Fern Spruill. “Representatives from the schools, including teachers, school administrators, students, and community programmers look forward to speaking about this ever-improving effort to move our community forward. The hands-on support of parents who will make this important step of commitment with the Princeton Regional Schools is imperative.”
The forum will give parents and other members of the community an opportunity to learn about efforts to improve and strengthen the relationship between parents, teachers, and students; strategies for improving communication between families and schools; strategies to motivate children to achieve more in school; and academic activities and support systems available in the district and the community.
The Family Forum is being coordinated by the MEC’s “No child left behind ad hoc committee,” whose motto is “We are the ones we have been waiting for.” Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Bonnie Lehet will be among the speakers.
Door prizes donated by JaZams, Hoagie Haven, Olive’s and others will be featured at the free event. Breakfast will be provided, and childcare will be available. Ms. Spruill said that volunteers, including greeters, ushers, sign-in-table managers, survey distributors, and child care providers are still needed, and that additional door prizes would be welcome. She looks forward to the cooperation of Princeton Young Achievers; the Princeton YMCA and YWCA; Princeton Not in Our Town (NIOT); the Latin American Legal Defense Fund (LALDF); the Arts Council; the Human Services Department; Corner House; the Princeton Public Library, the Borough Housing Council, Community House, and local clergy.
