Will Barrett was primed to get back into the fray last Sunday as the Princeton University men’s basketball hosted Division III Goucher College in its first action after a 17-day layoff for exams.
“It’s been tough playing against the same guys we have been playing against all year,” said freshman forward Barrett. “Goucher gave us a good fight tonight.”
The 6’10, 200-pound Barrett didn’t shrink away from the fight, producing career highs in points (13) and rebounds (8) to help Princeton cruise to an 88-35 win over the Gophers before 1,525 at Jadwin Gym.
As the most battle-tested player on the Princeton High boys’ basketball team, Skye Ettin looks to step up in crunch time.
“I try to help the team as much as possible,” said the 6’5 Ettin, who plays both guard and forward for PHS.
“I would definitely like the ball at the end of the game since I am a senior and I have been there.”
With PHS trailing powerful Trenton 50-37 coming into the fourth quarter last week, Ettin took the Little Tigers on his back.
Even though the Princeton High boys’ swimming team was locked in a tight battle at WW/P-N last Thursday, Victor Honore wasn’t checking out the scoreboard.
“I didn’t know the score; I was not paying attention,” said PHS sophomore Honore.
Instead, Honore was practicing the tunnel vision that has helped him become a star.
Janie Smukler would get frazzled at times last winter as the starting freshman point guard for the Princeton Day School girls’ basketball team.
“I was a little shaky last year,” said Smukler. “I am getting away from that.”
Last Wednesday against visiting Moorestown Friends, Smukler gave a vivid display of how far she has come since her debut season, scoring 23 points and dishing for seven assists to spark PDS to a 60-21 victory.
With Smukler calmly running the offense, the Panthers jumped out to a 22-5 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in winning their fifth straight game.
Diamond Lewis knew before the school year even started that she was going be facing a major challenge this winter for the Stuart Country Day School basketball team.
The senior point guard lost her two running mates over the summer as junior stars Amber Bowman and Jasmine Smarr both suffered serious knee injuries.
As the season has unfolded, Lewis has been carrying a heavy load for the Tartans.
