It’s New to Us by Jean Stratton

FASHION FORWARD: “We buy things that are versatile and with a different look. A boutique has a selection that offers variety and different choices.” Sherri Daugherty, owner and Danielle Swantko, manager of Angel Hearts, are shown in front of the charming Newtown boutique.

Angel Hearts Women’s Boutique in Newtown Offers One-of-a-Kind Designer Specialties

Everything about Angel Hearts is special, intriguing, and pleasing to the eye. From the bountiful flowers that decorate the entrance way to the displays of dresses and accessories draped over the red velvet sofa, every care has been taken to provide a happy shopping experience.

“I enjoy the customers,” says Sherri Daugherty, new owner of the women’s boutique at 10 South State Street in Newtown, “Women who shop are typically in a good mood or have a mission. We try very hard to have a friendly atmosphere. We don’t hover over customers, but we are always available to help.”

Ms. Daugherty, who has a corporate background, came from Michigan five years ago, and purchased the 20-year-old store last fall. Retail was a new venture, and she welcomed the experience.

“I was disappointed with the stores I saw. Everything seemed so mass-produced. When this shop became available, it was an opportunity for me. I’m keeping much of what the former owner had, but I am also trying to find my own way, and we have made some changes.”

Casual and dressy designer clothing for women, one-of-a-kind jewelry, scarves, handbags, belts, shoes, and the latest accessories for any event are on display.

Jewelry is shown in charming cabinets and cases throughout the store, and includes an appealing eclectic selection of all styles and prices. Lovely pendants are highlighted in nearly every display, and jewelry is typically priced from $38 to $1000-plus, with everything in between.

Every Corner

The boutique is easy to navigate, with interesting items in every corner, but with no sense of feeling crowded. Dressy and informal pants, jeans, dresses, skirts, and versatile tops of all kinds are prominently on display. One can move freely from area to area and complete the fashion statement: with a new dress, scarf, piece of jewelry, belt, and handbag!

“This spring, we are seeing more blousy, longer tunic-styles,” reports Ms. Daugherty. “This is an important fashion point for many people, including those who may be weight-conscious. They are in a variety of fabrics, and can be worn over a tank top, and with a scarf. They are very versatile.

“We have a lot of skirts, and these are typically longer lengths. Lavender, navy, and muted greens are popular colors for spring. Muted colors generally — an earth tone feeling — are favored. Of course, black is always popular.

“Also, for fall, we will see darker colors, including beautiful deep browns.”

Demand for jeans shows no sign of diminishing — they are forever and always!

“Jeans are so popular, especially when a customer finds a pair she feels is just right for her,” says Ms. Daugherty. They can be dressy or informal, and worn in many different settings.

Beautiful Fabrics

Designers at Angel Hearts include those whom Ms. Daugherty believes represent different styles and have something special or unique to offer. Popular lines include Avindy, Giles & Bros, Ericson Beamon, Hoss Intropia, Only Hearts, among others.

“Ericson Beamon offers beautiful fabrics that complement the body,” explains Ms. Daugherty. “Rachel Pally has fabric that is so soft, it feels like butter, and XCVI is very popular for us. It’s different and interesting, offering quality styles with friendly price points.

“I look forward to having many more designers here,” she continues. “In September, we will have Ivan Grundahl. His designs are fashion forward, a bit edgy. It’s something new for the store, and it will appeal to many age groups. We will also have the designs of Wayne, who is also fashion forward.”

These designs often appeal to those who like “city” fashion and styles, and will now be pleased not to have to travel to the city to find them.

Ms. Daugherty attends at least six large fashion shows throughout the year, and goes to other showrooms twice a month. It is necessary to think ahead in the fashion world, and she will soon be ordering for spring of 2011! Planning a year ahead is often customary.

And you will not see Angel Hearts clothes on everyone else or everywhere else! “We really emphasize one-of-a-kind,” she points out. “We will sometimes offer the same piece in two colors, or in several sizes, but that’s all.”

Fashion Style

Customers are all different, of course, with some very aware of their fashion style and others less certain.

“Some people know just what they like and are very definite. Others are less so. It’s always important to figure out what the customer wants. If she asks, we are happy to give fashion advice. She may be going to an event and wants some help. Also, sometimes, we can suggest something that is out of one’s normal comfort zone because we know it will look great on her.”

Customers at Angel Hearts are a variety of ages, and sizes range from extra small to extra large, with prices starting at $44 for a tank top and $75 for other tops. Layaway plans are available, and sales of selected items are regularly held. A current sale offers a 10 percent discount on summer tops and 20 percent off summer dresses.

Ms. Daugherty reports that giving back to the community is also important at Angel Hearts. She and the staff are often involved in helping charitable and community events.

She hopes more people from Princeton will find their way to her shop. It’s an easy trip, and as she says, “We have beautiful clothes for the outside for those who have the inside figured out! Look at our ad in the upcoming Princeton Magazine.”

Angel Hearts is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday and Friday 10 to 8, Sunday noon to 5. (215) 968-1614.
