To the Editor:
As a volunteer for the Princeton Family YMCA, I get to see the good work our YMCA does every day. But you might not be aware of the important charitable mission of the YMCA, and how that mission is making a difference in the lives of more than 6,000 people from our region right now. The Princeton Family YMCA’s service area is truly expansive, including the communities of Princeton, Princeton Junction, Cranbury, East Windsor, Kingston, Lawrence, Montgomery and Plainsboro.
The YMCA believes that every child should be able to participate in YMCA programs and membership, regardless of their parents’ financial situation. Through the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, our local YMCA is making sure that more people have access to life-changing Y programs.
The YMCA financial assistance program provides subsidies for YMCA membership and programs such as swim lessons, youth sports, day camp, after school programs and more. The Y is able to provide this assistance through generous, tax-deductible donations to the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign from area residents and businesses.
The Strong Kids Campaign will run for nine weeks. I urge all of our neighbors to consider supporting this important cause. Even if you don’t use the YMCA yourself, our community is strengthened by having safe, nurturing places for youth and teens to spend time after school and on weekends. Plus, the money we raise stays right here in our community, helping the kids and families who live in our neighborhoods.
Now more than ever, we need to take care of our community’s future by taking care of our kids and families. Please join me in supporting the YMCA and let’s all do a little “preventive maintenance” on our community.

The best of the best were honored last week by the YWCA Princeton at the 27th annual Tribute to Women awards dinner.
More than 400 family, friends, and colleagues met at the Hyatt Regency Princeton to celebrate the achievements of 11 women as outstanding leaders in their fields and in their communities. The honorary chair was Patricia Mae Doykos of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation; other honorees were Judith Brodsky and Ingrid W. Reed of Rutgers University; Teena Cahill, Wisdom & Beyond; Michelle Emerson, Melting Pot Gifts; Michelle Vaccaro Everman, Mercadien; Carol Golden, community activist; Kathleen Maguire Morolda, Cranbury Station Galleries; Vanessa Sandom, former mayor of Hopewell Township; Debbie Schaeffer, Mrs. G TV & Appliances; and Marjorie A. Young of Princeton University.
Our sponsors helped to make this outstanding and inspirational evening possible. We thank partner Bristol-Myers Squibb, leader NRG Energy, and associate sponsors Covance, McNeil Nutritionals, and the Times of Trenton. Since 1984, the YWCA Princeton has recognized more than 300 outstanding regional women who are not only professionally accomplished but who also follow the YWCA mission of eliminating racism and empowering women. It is no coincidence that Tribute to Women is held in March, National Women’s History Month.
We are very grateful to those who made this year’s Tribute such a success, and to our honorees who have enriched the lives of those around them, locally, nationally, and globally.
