Catherine “Sister” Reeves of Princeton died March 11 in the University Medical Center at Princeton. Born in Princeton, she was a lifelong resident.
Educated in the Princeton school system, she graduated from Princeton High School in 1928. Following study in beauty culture schools, she was employed by Margaret Jeffries Beauty Salon and Anthony’s Beauty Salon.
She was an active member of Witherspoon Street Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon and as a member of many committees.
Daughter of the late George and Daisy Reeves, she is survived by a brother-in-law, James A. Floyd Sr.; two nephews, James A. Floyd Jr. and Michael R. Floyd; and a niece, Joyce Reeves.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Paul Robeson House Fund, c/o Witherspoon Street Presbyterian Church, 124 Witherspoon Street, Princeton 08542.
The funeral service will be conducted at Witherspoon Street Presbyterian Church on Thursday, March 18 at noon. Viewing hours are from 10 a.m. to noon.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Hughes Funeral Home.
Ruth Stanton Thompson, 81, of Princeton, died peacefully March 13, after a long illness.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio to Thomas and Florence Stanton, she attended Antioch College, then earned a bachelor’s degree in Russian Studies at Fordham University. She married in 1951 and raised six children, who were the pride and joy of her life.
She had a lifelong interest in literature and writing, begun as editor of her high school newspaper and pursued in the early 1950s on the staff of a Russian newspaper published at the United Nations. After studying the law, she worked as an administrator at the Council on Foreign Relations and at the New Jersey state courthouse in New Brunswick. In her 60s, she returned to her literary interests and entered Rutgers University’s doctoral program in comparative literature.
A regular at the Princeton pool, she led an active life. She could be seen riding her bicycle around town well into her 70s.
She is survived by her children, Christine Thompson of Lincoln, Mass., Benjamin Thompson of Ann Arbor, Mich., Mark Thompson of Canby, Ore., Matthew Thompson of Berwyn, Pa., Elizabeth Thompson of Washington, D.C., and Thomas Thompson of Manistee, Mich.; a brother, Thomas Stanton of Vienna, Va.; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. this Friday, March 19 at St. Paul’s Church, 214 Nassau Street. Burial will be private.
