With three minutes remaining in regulation last Friday in its ECAC Hockey semifinal clash against Cornell, the Princeton University men’s hockey team appeared to be on track to author a stirring sequel to last season’s league title run.
The eighth-ranked Tigers led the No. 7 Big Red 3-1, a seemingly safe advantage with the league’s Player of the Year, junior goalie Zane Kalemba, between the pipes.
But Cornell shocked the Tigers and the crowd of 3,517 on hand at the Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y., scoring twice over the last 2:52 of the contest to force overtime.
Josh Lesko’s offensive production has been heading in the wrong direction during his career with the Princeton University men’s lacrosse team.
During his freshman season in 2006, Lesko tallied 17 points on 11 goals and six assists. A year later, Lesko was down to nine points and then managed just five points last spring in his junior season.
Coming into this spring, Lesko decided to make a change in direction as he sought a shift to the team’s shortstick midfield defensive unit.
It was a run of the mill early season meet when the Princeton High boys’ swimming team hosted Hamilton in early January.
With PHS boasting another solid squad, there was no drama surrounding the final result as they competed against struggling Hamilton.
But as the swimmers lined up for the 200 freestyle, shouts of “Sean, Sean” started ringing through the John Witherspoon Middle School pool.
The yells were for senior Sean MacKenzie, who was making his first appearance for PHS since 2007.
Bill Quirk is having trouble making a key decision as he takes over the Hun School boys’ lacrosse team.
“It’s really easy to see that we are senior heavy,” said Quirk, the Hun athletic director and longtime assistant softball coach who is replacing Greg Provenzano as the Raider boys’ lax head coach.
“One of the questions people ask me is who is going to be the captain. I think as a whole the seniors are great leaders. They each have their own little thing that they bring to the table. I don’t want to single out individuals. I am trying to get this group to focus on the team aspect. We may go with game captains.”
Over the past three seasons, Elizabeth Bucklee and Caroline Passano have provided plenty of offensive firepower for the Stuart Country Day lacrosse team.
Last spring, Bucklee fired in 82 goals while Passano piled up 103 points on 57 goals and 46 assists as the Tartans went 13-5 on the way to winning their fourth consecutive state Prep B title.
Heading into the 2009 campaign, Stuart head coach Sara Wagner is looking for more than scoring from her prolific one-two punch.
