The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) at Mercer County will officially close for the season on the last day of April, announced County Executive Brian M. Hughes. The Mercer County Housing and Community Development office will accept clients from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Thursday, April 30, the final day to apply for assistance. To apply, please contact the Mercer County Housing and Community Development Office at (609) 989-6858 or 989-6959 or visit the office on the fourth floor of the County Administration Building at 640 South Broad Street.

The Princeton-based Coalition for Peace Action (CFPA) and Trenton Friends Meeting are hosting a group of young interfaith peace walkers on their way from Philadelphia to New York in a Peace Walk for Nuclear Abolition as they arrive in the area on Saturday, April 24 and Sunday, April 25. The walkers will begin their Walk on April 22, Earth Day, in Philadelphia, and are on their way to New York for the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty Review Conference starting at U.N. Headquarters on May 3, and for public events immediately before that. There will be a potluck dinner starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 24 at the Trenton Friends Meeting, 142 E. Hanover Street in Trenton. All are welcome, and encouraged to bring a dish to share. Following the meal, CFPA Executive Director Rev. Bob Moore will facilitate discussion with the walkers, in which attendees can ask questions and interact with the walkers and each other. On Sunday, April 25, the walkers will leave from Trenton at approximately 11 a.m. following their attendance at the weekly Meeting for Worship at the Trenton Meeting. Supporters are encouraged to join them for all or part of the walk to Princeton, which will follow Route 206 through Lawrenceville.

At 5 p.m., CFPA is sponsoring a welcoming Rally and Gathering at Palmer Square until approximately 6 p.m. Interested people from the area, especially those who were unable to express their support for the walkers in Trenton for the April 24 event, are encouraged to come. The Republican Women of Mercer County, through its affiliation with the Federation of Republican Women, is seeking nominations for scholarships for young women. Three annual National Pathfinder Scholarships of $2,500 each honor former First Lady Nancy Reagan. College sophomores, juniors, and seniors, as well as students enrolled in masters programs are eligible to apply. Three annual Betty Rendel Scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded to undergraduate students majoring in political science, government, or economics. Scholarship winners will be chosen from applicants nationwide who have successfully completed at least two years of college. Applications for both scholarships are available online at the Republican Women of Mercer County’s web site,  www.rwomc.org. Applications must include the completed form, three letters of recommendation, an official copy of the applicant’s college transcript, two one-page typed essays, and an optional photograph. Completed application packages should be submitted to the Republican Women of Mercer County, PO Box 901, Pennington, N.J. by May 15.

The Mercer County Park Commission’s Summer Nature Camp will be held for five weeks during the summer and is open to children entering first grade through seventh grade.
