Forer Closes After 40 Years on Witherspoon

Dilshanie Perera

Forer Pharmacy, one of the few remaining locally-owned pharmacies, closed its doors at 160 Witherspoon Street on Monday.

Recently purchased by CVS, the business was owned and operated by twin brothers Mel and Ira Atlas of Short Hills and Princeton, New Jersey, respectively.

The phone number listed for Forer already reroutes to the CVS on Nassau Street, which is slated to receive the pharmacy’s remaining inventory, files, and stock.

With all five of the employees of Forer retiring this year both preceding and following the store’s closure, Mr. Atlas characterized the decision as a difficult one to make. Nonetheless, the brothers, who are 68, are looking forward to the time off.

They will remain the owners of the building at 160 Witherspoon, and will likely look for a ground floor commercial tenant, though selling the building is also an option.
