Philip James Mara Jr., 44, of Princeton, died unexpectedly November 5.
The son of Philip and Nancy Mara, he was born in Boston, graduated from Worcester Academy, and attended Connecticut College.
He worked in sales and marketing and as a fundraiser for the Pennington School, Hun School, and Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg, Pa. He was also known to many as an ice hockey coach at the Pennington and Hun Schools, and with local youth hockey organizations.
He was a keen boater, golfer, and New England sports fan, but his passion was ice hockey and he had played on teams for both alma maters.
He spent many happy summers with his family and friends in the small island community of North Haven, Maine. Among his greatest joys was watching his two children play sports at their schools, The Hill School in Pottstown, Pa. and St. Andrew’s School in Middletown, Del. He will be remembered as a big man with a big heart who made friends easily and was devoted to his family.
Predeceased by a sister, Janice Marie Cardin of Grafton, Mass., he is survived by his wife of 20 years, Milbrey Southerland Mara, a son, Philip James (PJ) Mara III, and a daughter, Charlotte Mason Mara, all of Princeton; his parents, Philip and Nancy Mara of Cataumet, Mass.; and a sister, Anne Marie Winslow of Grafton, Mass. His extended family includes parents-in-law Tom and Margot Southerland of Princeton.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 14 at 11:30 a.m. at Trinity Church, 33 Mercer Street.

Marianna Rixey Calcote, 87, of Hightstown, formerly of Princeton, died November 5 at Meadow Lakes in Hightstown.
Born in Fredericksburg, Va., she was the first child of Joseph William Rixey and Jennie Dunaway Thompson Rixey. She later moved to Washington, D.C. with her mother and stepfather, Robert C. Clendening, where she attended public school and met her future husband, Hartwell F. Calcote, in Junior High School. She was active in the music programs in school, singing many solos. At Eastern High School she was a member of Theta Alpha Chi sorority.
She worked for AT&T and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington. Married in 1943, the Calcotes lived in Princeton, the suburbs of Richmond, and Princeton again, returning in 1956. Mrs. Calcote was active in Princeton United Methodist Church for many years and served as president of the Women’s Club of Princeton from 1979 to 1980. The Calcotes retired to Meadow Lakes in Hightstown in 2001.
Mrs. Calcote’s hobbies included bridge and crossword puzzles. She enjoyed traveling extensively with her husband during their 66 years of marriage.
She is survived by her husband, Hartwell F. Calcote, and her children Elaine Britt of Princeton, Linda Kayser of West Orange, Randy Calcote of Roseville, Minn., and Donna Briggs of Pemberton; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be scheduled for late November or early December. Memorial donations may be sent in lieu of flowers to U.S Marines Toys for Tots Foundation, or HomeFront, Lawrenceville.
